Holy Ascension Monastery to Sponsor 2nd Annual Monastic Youth Retreat

This summer from August 8th to 14th (n.s), Holy Ascension Monastery in Bearsville, New York, will host its second annual retreat for young men ages 12-25. The young men will participate in the monastery life, attending the services, talking with the Fathers about the spiritual life, and assisting with the obediences of the monastery. Of course there will be plenty of fun, too: hiking, exploring, and a bonfire. Don’t miss this opportunity to help the Fathers while learning about monasticism and developing a deeper understanding of our Orthodox life.

History

Holy Ascension Monastery was founded in 1999 by His Eminence Metropolitan PAVLOS, to be the spiritual center of the Holy Metropolis GOC of America. His Eminence Metropolitan PAVLOS chose to dedicate the new spiritual center of the Metropolis to the Holy Ascension to honor his predecessor Metropolitan PETROS of blessed memory.

Before coming to America Geronda PETROS was a monk at the Skete of St. Anna on the Holy Mountain Athos. The cell that Geronda PETROS occupied at that skete had a chapel that was dedicated to the Holy Ascension. Before establishing Holy Ascension Monastery, Metropolitan PAVLOS paid a visit to the Holy Monastery of Esphigmenou on Mount Athos and asked the Hegumenos (Fr. Euthymios of Blessed Memory) to suggest a name for the new monastery in America. The Hegumenos suggested, “Holy Ascension.”
